To all, I wish a happy Samhain and safe trick or treating.  I also wish the best of luck to those who are participating in Nanowrimo this year.  And I also wish the best of luck and safety to all those along the east coast that have been effected by Hurricane Sandy.

Every year I want to celebrate Samhain in the best possible way that a pagan can, but with space and supplies being limited, I have decided to do a short meditation on the Death cards from two of my favorite decks, the Ludy Lescot and the Wildwood Tarot.

I have always found death to be fascinating, yet not something to take lightly.  Working in the hospital like I do, I am ever aware of its presence.  I’ve had my brushes with death, and I’ve mourned the loss of loved ones and friends.  I’ve always wondered about my ancestors, who they were and where they came from, as I know very little about my own genealogy. I’ve been urged to get my grandmother to talk about what she knows when she arrives for Thanksgiving, and instead of looking at this as just a way to placate familial traditions, I sense it could hold much wisdom and hidden knowledge.

The Death card in the Tarot does not imply impending doom or loss, as our culture would have us believe.  Right now, I see Death as an ending cycle, and a new beginning.  A change of situation and life.  As the leaves fall to the ground to be ground under the hooves of deer and become nutrition for next spring’s growth, I have kept a constant vigil for a sign of change in my current stagnated life.  As Peter Pan says in “Hook”, “To die would be a wonderful adventure.”

I won’t seek out Death, like one should not seek to cause trouble.  I seek only the end to unemployment, boredom, fears, writer’s block.  I seek only to hold a funeral for the circumstances that have held me back and which can no longer serve me.

As the Moon rises in the sky tonight, Her waning energies beginning, I take inventory of the things I believe must go.  Admitting that I need to release fears is the first steps of a new journey.  It’s the end of being stuck.  It’s the end of hiding your real fears behind desire and irritation.  It’s a signal that you are indeed ready to move onto the next stage in the process, and you must leave these things behind.  By naming them, you have weakened their power over you.  Now, let them go.

Tomorrow, when the sun rises and colors the sky, I think I will use the energy from the Death card to hold a ritual of grief and release.  I will state the fears and aspects of myself that must be left behind to decay, so that I may recognize my true potential.  I will say their names, cry salty tears of release and mourning, and watch as they float downstream, away from me, never to be recovered.

What is your take on Death?  How do you read the Death card when you encounter it?  Post your comments below.

Happy Samhain, everybody!!!  I’m doing things a little different this morning.  I have a job interview in a couple of hours for a job that I really, really want. So I decided to do the Job Interview spread found in The Dreamer’s Journal, by Barbara Moore, to gain a little bit more insight to what I may face.  (I’ll post more details when I return.) “Hard and challenging (I should really say stimulating) work will bring you into a joyous union of spirit and mind.  But beware the ones who cannot loosen their grip on the power they hold.  Your revolutionary ideas and views will clash with the ones in place, whether your opponent be one person or a whole culture.  Remember; you’re just a little bit ahead of the rest, and progress is frightening to many people.”

“Seek new directions of growth and self-development.  This could mean a change of attitude towards your battles and a release of ‘silly’ fears.  Doing so will be tough work, but persevere and you will reach your goals.  Once you are there, you will know; the sun will shine brighter and you will emerge from slumber.  Keep track of your progress and watch yourself grow.”

“Do not look back on the heartbreaking thoughts of alienation that you may experience at home.  Focus on renewing old friendships and growing new connections.  Find a gathering of spirits and just go.  Keep watch for the ships of opportunity to come in, and do not discredit a learning opportunity or advice.  Hold fast to the knowledge that your calling is soon to sound. Keep your eyes and ears open to its alert.  More than ever, be social.  Learn how to network and how to present yourself to others that may not be ready for the raw energy and power that you possess.  Remember, too much light can blind.”

The Dream

I dreamed that I had a couple of friends over to my house one summer afternoon. For some reason, I kept spilling drinks all over myself. In frustration, I pulled off my clothes (a pink maxi skirt, a white button-down, and white panties… all of things I would never wear) and threw them outside on the back porch to dry. I went out to lay them flat in the sun. I could see the clouds in the northwestern sky building into big thunderstorms. An acquaintance and her mother showed up for some reason. My friend was chatting about all the clothes she had bought earlier that day. She laid out a black t-shirt with a tuxedo printing on the front, and a bow-tie with a famous someone in the middle. I couldn’t understand what the big deal was because it seemed to be a cultural thing. Her brother showed up too, and he asked about the shirt. My friend started to talk about the price she had gotten it for. Then I woke up.

The Reading

“The Page is your own inner child; inhibited and forthright and straight-forward.  This is how you act in the dream when you throw caution to the wind and remove your wet clothes.  There is a thundercloud behind the Knight of cups very similar to the clouds you saw building.  Follow your dreams and keep your intuition sharp.  But also be mindful of the rest your mind and body need.  Take care of yourself first.  Rest, and let yourself heal before taking on your challenges.”

“You are quite aware that the Universe and its abundance are readily available to you.  Ask it for what you want and need; then, take an inventory or your limitations and the things that hold you back from reaching your dreams.  Work through them diligently, evaluating their successes or failures.”

“Tonight’s ritual gives you a unique opportunity to be assertive and stand up for yourself and your beliefs.  It will be a cleansing event that will wash you free of spiritual muck and allow you to find a clarity of purpose again.  Be renewed, and you can start laying your foundation.”

It’s not unusual for me to have quite a few dreams at night.  Some stand out more than others, while some will fade away as I wake.  Last night was one of those nights where I was able to recall about five different dream sequences.  I peeled away two as they just seemed like subconscious processing.  They didn’t have a lot of meat to them.  That left three different sequences to look into.

I decided to create a dream spread just for this unique purpose.  The three rows represent the three dream sequences that were more meaty than the other two.  The columns, from left to right, are: How does this dream connect with events in my life, what is this dream trying to tell me, and how can I use this dream in my life.  The High Priestess at the top currently serves no other purpose than to act as a guardian to the subconscious realm and the intuitive secrets hidden there.  I can’t really say how she came into the spread other than it just felt right to put her there.
